Your Mother as a Person – Magical Evening

Our mothers were once young too. What were their dreams and hopes?

A mother often feels like a guiding force in her daughter’s life—strong, ever-present, and in control. From childhood, she is the one who shapes the world around her. But as a daughter grows, she may not always see the person behind the role—the woman with her own dreams, challenges, and emotions. Learning to view a mother as a person, not just a parent, can bring understanding, empathy, and even healing.

Below is a poem by my mother, Marlou Newkirk (an award-winning poet). We are sharing it because it gave me a new perspective—helping me see her not just as “Mom,” but as a young woman with a life before motherhood.

MAGICAL EVENING

My mother had a new friend
New friend had a son
Mothers decided we should go on
blind date
No no no no no no no no no no
I agreed to stop her hounding me

It was love at first sight
We talked all night, told me places
we would go, things we would do

He smiled at me

France thrill of hot air balloon ride
England marvel at theater best in world
Scotland giggle laugh Fringe Festival
Ireland pulsating rhythm Irish dance

He held me close

Austria ski white majestic mountains
Belize frolic in beautiful blue water
Morocco revel sights, sounds, smells
Turkey bask in beautiful Blue Mosque

He held me closer

Australia dive deep Great Barrier Reef
India mesmerized by Taj Mahal wonder of the world
Japan hold hands under Cherry Blossoms
Thailand embrace temples, ancient ruins

After that splendid night
He never called
He never got in touch at all
